​Castle House Museum is located in Dunoon’s historic Castle Gardens.

We are just 34 miles from Glasgow, 49 miles from Loch Lomond and 76 miles from Oban, making our town an ideal destination from which to explore the beautiful and vast landscape of Cowal- known as the gateway to the Highlands.

Public Transport:

 

Rail and Ferry Services 

Dunoon can be reached by a combination of rail and ferry services.


The ferry service to Dunoon can be easily reached by train. The Scotrail service runs from Glasgow Central to Gourock Station multiple times a day. The fast train takes 40 minutes, and the longer train approximately 50 minutes. Please see the Scotrail website for more information on fares and times. Both Glasgow Central and Gourock Station have step-free access, and the AccessAble website features further information about accessibility at Glasgow Central. 

 

Once you have arrived in Gourock, the closest passenger ferry service is ran by Cal Mac. This is 3 minutes from Gourock Station. Information on service status, fares, and sailings can be found on the CalMac Website. The duration of the crossing is 25 minutes. 

 

Once in Dunoon Castle House Museum is seven minutes from the Cal Mac ferry terminal. From the terminal, cross the road at the zebra crossing. You will see the Dunoon War Memorial that is opposite a large glass building called The Queens Hall. From here, head up the inclined path until you reach the top. Castle House Museum is located here.

By Bus: 

 

If you are staying in the surrounding area, you can also visit Castle House Museum by bus. The  local company is West Coast Motors, please see their website for more information regarding fares, timetables, and accessibility. The closest bus stop is at the ‘Castle Gardens,’ just a few minutes from the Museum entrance. 

 

By Car: 

Castle House Museum can be accessed by car. You can check your route via the AA Route Planner.  If you are travelling from Glasgow and the surrounding areas, Gourock is a 49 minute drive along the M8. The car ferry to Dunoon is run by Western Ferries, located at Mcinroy’s Point in Gourock. Please see their website for information on fares, ticket agents, times, and accessibility. The ferry docks in Hunter’s Quay, a six minute drive from the Museum. 

 

There is a small car park outside the Museum which can accommodate five cars. There are also two accessible spaces near the entrance of the Museum. By Bicycle: 

National Cycle Route 75 passes through Dunoon along the Esplanade. More information can be found here: https://www.argyll-bute.gov.uk/sites/default/files/2023-11/dunoon1.pdf. Please note that we do not currently have a bike rack at the Museum and bikes are left at their own risk. Up to three bikes may be tucked under the stairs in the foyer at any one time.
